Children in Wales

Children in Wales is the national umbrella body for organisations and individuals who work with children and young people in Wales.

We are a membership body, and our members are drawn from the voluntary, statutory and professional sectors.  We work with and for our members to promote their interests and meet their needs. Together we:
• Contribute to making implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) a reality in Wales
• Fight for sustainable quality services and fair shares for all children and young people
• Ensure special attention and treatment for children in need and those who are marginalised
• Ensure children and young people have a voice

Over the last 15 years, Children in Wales have been at the forefront of influencing policy at local, national and UK level. Our key achievements include:
• Ensuring that the UNCRC underpins all the Welsh Assembly Government’s work with children and young people
• The appointment of the first Children’s Commissioner in the UK
• The establishment of the first post of Minister for Children within the UK
• The creation of Funky Dragon, the Children and Young People’s Assembly in Wales

Our core activities include:
• Advising, supporting and representing members
• Disseminating information on policy, research and best practice
• Promoting Wales-based research about children and families
• Co-ordinating policy initiatives agreed with members
• Educating the public on children's issues
• Acting as a focal point for campaigns supporting the interests of children
• Provide a public mouthpiece for children especially the most disadvantaged
• Drawing attention to serious deficiencies in services for children
• Improving services through practice development projects
• Facilitating and supporting the work of others with similar aims
• Promoting issues and good practice in Wales the UK, Europe and Internationally

Children in Wales is able to organise a range of training events in Welsh and English and can develop new courses to meet commissioners' needs. We also co-ordinate a number of forums and networks across Wales and these provide participants with a chance to get together to exchange information, share good practice and network with others in their field. Forum members are also able to raise issues of concern relating to a range of policy areas which Children in Wales can channel through to policy makers.
