What is Participation?

According to Our Rights, the Charter of Rights for Gwynedd Children and Young People, every child or young person have the right to Have Your Say on any decision that affect them.

The literal meaning of Participation is ‘to take part’, it could range from taking part in an activity to be a part of planning a project. The Welsh Assembly Government’s definition of participation, drawn up by a young person, is:

“Participation means that it is my right to be involved in making decisions, planning and reviewing any action that might affect me. Having a voice, having a choice.”

Participation is a process, a way of working that ensures that children and young people’s voices are heard and listened to. This could be though events or regularly by communicating and including children and young people whilst making decisions, establishing schemes and evaluating services. not an event, and the outcome is empowerment.

Gwynedd Participation Strategy for Children and Young People

Gwynedd Children and Young People’s Strategic Partnership have committed to the Gwynedd Participation Strategy since September 2007, but has been recently (May 2012) updated to include families. It specifies the purpose and method of participation in Gwynedd. See documents attached for full version and a child and young person friendly version.

Promoting Children and Young People’s Participation

Following the release of the Participation Strategy for Children and Young People the Gwynedd Children and Young People’s Strategic Partnership require each agency to recognise and individual that lead on the local participation work, and nominate them as a contact point.

A self assessment questionnaire is sent out and a further opportunity for agencies to state what kind or help and support needed to develop their participation methods. See below for a copy of the Self Assessment. If you haven’t already filled it in, we would appreciate if you could do so and send it back to us as soon as possible.

The results from the Self Assessment will lead the Participation and Rights Team to offer relevant support and resources to agencies in order to increase children and young people’s participation.
