Learning to Drive

You can’t start your lessons until you have a provisional driving licence. You can apply for it up to three months before your 17th birthday so that you can start your lessons straight away.
Tip - Many young people ask for lessons as a birthday present!

You can apply for your provisional license by completing a D1 Application form which you can get from your Post Office or you can download it from the DVLA website. Once you fill in the information you can print the form, enclose a photograph and the fee which at the moment is £34 and then send it off to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD.  You will receive a paper copy and a Photo ID Card, keep them safe as you will be charged if you need a duplicate.

While you are learning to drive you cannot drive the car on your own, you must have a driver who is older than 21 who passed their test more than three years ago. While you are learning you must also display L (Learner) or D (Dysgu) plates on the car.

It’s important that you feel relaxed and comfortable with whoever is going to teach you. Some will choose to learn with family and friends and others will choose a driving school or instructor. You can search our directory in the ‘Activities and Help’ box on the right to find contact details for local driving instructors.

Choosing a driving instructor
If you are paying someone to teach you to drive, they must be approved and registered with the Driving Standards Agency  (DSA).

To qualify, an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) must:
• be registered with the Driving Standards Agency
• have passed a criminal record check
• pass a much tougher theory and practical driving test
• display an ADI identification certificate on the windscreen
• maintain a high standard of instruction which is regularly checked by the DSA

Find your nearest driving instructors
You can use the Gwynedd-Ni online directory service to find driving instructors who are approved and registered with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) or search the Directgov website.
